Read “A Personal Cyberinfrastructure” by Gardner Campbell. It’s from 2009, so in some ways it’s a dated essay; however, I thinik Campbell’s critique of higher education’s educational technology decisions is still on point and still believe that the vision he lays out for owning your own intellectual work is valuable.

I would also like you to find one or two websites that you would hold up as a model for the website that you’re constructing in this class, preferably a personal website created by an individual to showcase their own work. It would be great if that person is in a field that you see yourself moving into in the future.

Here are a couple examples I would elevate to think about:

Cheryl Ball has two websites: her more academic site, from when she was a tenure track professor, and her current site that focuses on her work in publishing consulting and project managment. There are a number of really interesting, and risky, moves that she makes in this site that you probably won’t want to.

Martha Burtis is a friend and one of the educational technologists behind Domain of One’s Own at UMW. She is now the Director of the Open Learning & Teaching Collaborative at Plymouth State University.
